You’ve always been the odd one out.
Ever since you’ve been a kid, you’ve felt like you just don’t fit. When the other kids were playing dodgeball at recess, you were in a quiet corner of the playground, escaping into the fantasy novel you had already read 20 times and planning the fan fiction you were going to write at home.
It didn’t bother you much — you’d always done fine at school. You were a “pleasure to have in class,” so your parents didn’t worry. Maybe you even had a few close friends who were also a little “quirky.”
But you always felt mystified by others’ behavior and felt like you didn’t fit in.
It was supposed to get better as an adult.
If you could just get past school, everything would be better. People promised you that “it gets better,” and it did, just not good enough.
It seems like no matter how hard you try, you just can’t get your life to go the way you want it. Maybe work is okay, but you have no social relationships. Maybe you have good friends, but can’t hold onto a job for the life of you. Or, perhaps, all of these areas of life are fine, but you are just so tired of all the effort it takes, and you’re not sure how much longer you can keep it up.
You’re not defective, but you are different — and that’s okay.
You wonder why you struggle with things others don’t. You may have suspected for some time that there was something different about you.
Maybe you’ve just gotten diagnosed as autistic as an adult — maybe you haven’t been diagnosed, but you see plenty of “traits” and resonate with what you read from the autistic community. Maybe your kid just got diagnosed and you see so much of yourself in them that it has made you wonder if you’re quite as neurotypical as you thought.
Nobody taught you how to care for the uniqueness of you.
With neurodivergence comes different needs. Your self care does not look like that of others. Maybe you don’t actually need to get out more and instead need to take time to nurture your rich internal world. I don’t know what that looks like for you, but for me it’s bingeing fantasy audiobooks and making art out of seeds.
I will teach you how to recognize your needs and advocate for them.
In therapy, we will pay attention to what is happening in your body and tune into the intelligence of your emotions.
Together, we will restore your innate wisdom and the confidence to listen to what you truly need.
In a safe and supportive environment, we’ll sort out what patterns hold you back from the care you deserve.
You will learn that you are worthy and whole as you are.
For most people growing up as quirky kids, there were messages that you weren’t okay as you are. You might have been called “too sensitive” or “crybaby.” Perhaps some well-meaning people told you that you should smile more, take up sports, or try to show interest in the latest boy band or sitcom so that it would be easier for others to relate to you.
The problem was never you…
The problem was trying to make your unique self change to make others more comfortable. You don’t need to do that anymore.
Your answers are waiting inside you.
